Teaching yoga at the gym vs yoga studio

Hi , I just quit my full time job and choose my path as a full time yoga teacher . There is a lot more to learn especially when you are a teacher . I am currently teaching at the gym ( only for yoga ) and studio which is own by some other teacher. My teaching is always based on more alignment and technique rather than just posing in front of the students . I also do a lot of adjustment and touching the students . I am doing this to both the gym...

nine scientific facts

11-02-2013, 05:40 AM Some-of-the-Scientific-Mira.jpgEver since the dawn of mankind, we have sought to understand nature and our place in it. In this quest for the purpose of life many people have turned to religion. Most religions are based on books claimed by their followers to be divinely inspired, without any proof. Islam is different because it is based upon reason and proof. There are clear signs that the book of Islam, the Quran, is the word...

Ankle hurts badly in Lotus Pose

Hi Cass, you should not be suffering in any asana....see Gordon's earlier post. If the suffering is the pain in your ankle during Marichyasana B & D the variations with one leg in half lotus. Then please stop doing these until your ankle is fully healed and your hips are open/flexible enough for half lotus without any pressure on your ankle or knee.If it is something else that is hurting you must speak to your teacher about it. If he/she cannot give you alternative asanas to do instead or a series of asanas to do to overcome the problem.......you...

Worldwide do-it-yourself yoga retreat

I have travelled to different places in the world to do yoga. I do not ever do retreats mainly because its crazy expensive but also because I do not need all that and can find my own accomodations, massage and healthy food and generally at local prices. I much prefer to rent a house or guesthouse and join up at a studio offering a multitude of types of styles of yoga, cost is perhaps $100 dollars per month just for the yoga. I do intensive yoga, detox, and indulge in luxuries, have never paid more than $1000 dollars per month. I have been going...

Is it ok for yoga to hurt if working on an injury?

Let's see where to begin. 1. only muscles should be stretched. Tendons should not.2. Because the foot is in plantar flexion in Virasana (Hero's pose) the tendon in the back of the ankle (Achilles) is shortened not lengthened. Therefore it is incredibly difficult to stretch that tendon in that pose. 3. Have your asana teacher modify Virasana until there's no pain in the tendon. __________________Gordon KaplanPresident, Team Yogahttp://www.teamyoga.com/- - - - Certified Purna Yoga Teacher (CPYT)RYT-500, ERYT-200, IAYT,M.S. Recommendation for Authentic KY Guru in India?

Hello Friends,I am new to this forum and just joined it moment back. My spiritual journey begun few years back but ended with huge disasters. I was badly cheated and exploited by a Hindu Guru "Ashutosh Maharaj Ji, Founder of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Santhan, He claimed to impart a "Divine Knowledge, in Hindi that is called "BrahmGyan" with four folds Kriya. 1- Seeing Divine light (while pressing eyes hard and that makes white orb in eyelid),2-Sumiran/japa,...

Eco Friendly Yoga Mats

Dearest ahimsa, how you make so much sense on all levels, but how hard it is to follow you. And oh how if you were a person, I'd probably punch you in the face out of frustration. In case you don't know what ahimsa is, there are eight limbs of yoga, one of which is the yamas, and ahimsa or "non violence" is one of those. I won't go any deeper into it which no doubt has some yoga scholars chomping at the bit, but many will take ahimsa to the level of trying to be environmentally friendly. You know, non violent towards mother earth and all her cute...

Acceptance and attachment

10-23-2013, 01:39 PM Gotta share this. I have just met a homeless woman at the beach. She seem to be intelligent and smart. Her name is Chandra (moon in Sanskrit). Her father named her. He was a ?hari krisha? she said. Then she told me the story of her troublesome parents?..She had been raped and had an abortion at the age of 18, and things of that nature?. Chandra looks like she is 50yo, but she is just 32, like me. She just had a baby boy this...

How to tell if a yoga teacher training is good?

Hi EbonyYogi, First of all check your budget and come up with objective of becoming a "certified yoga teacher". Some may want to have another certificate and some want to become a yoga teacher to teach at another studio and some may want to start their own studio. In most of the cases you want to get a certificate which is valid and widely recognized. Yoga Alliance is one of the most popular choices as these days yoga schools/studios are asking for it.Learning from a certified school or having a certificate doesn't mean that you are very good...

Vidian neurectomy and ida/pingala circuit

Hello, I've been suffering allergic and vasomotor rhinitis for the past six years and what doctors here have prescribed me is all about corticoids and chemicals, something I've rejected. This disorder is really disrupting my normal life and yoga sadhana.I've read that vidian neurectomy, namely cutting off the two nasal nerves responsible for the disorder, is effective to a satisfying degree. My question is: Could this affect my nadi shodhana practice...

Help! Advice Needed! Bad Practice Week! :(

Hi, Thanks for your super fast reply - i really appreciate it!!The room is heated to 105 degrees and can be very humid at times - depending on how many people are in the room. Usually the heat doesn’t bother me but recently i find it unbearable.Yesterdays class in particular had a lot of people sit out - it was surprising to see so many people from the front row sit out.I just researched heat exhaustion and these are the symptoms I have:heavy sweating (this is given - considering it is in yoga - but i dont experience this otherwise)dizziness extreme...

Is spritiual belief required to be a yogi?

07-24-2013, 10:11 PM Is spritiual belief required to be a yogi? I consider myself an atheist. I was raised as a Christian, but over the past 10years I've rejected that for non-theism. However, I note (at least online) that most yogis/yoginis emphasise spiritual practice as part of yoga. Of course, yoga's roots are spiritual, but as a non-theist I don't really care about spirituality. So can an atheist be a yogi, or do I need to adopt spiritual...
