Teaching yoga at the gym vs yoga studio

Hi , I just quit my full time job and choose my path as a full time yoga teacher . There is a lot more to learn especially when you are a teacher . I am currently teaching at the gym ( only for yoga ) and studio which is own by some other teacher.

My teaching is always based on more alignment and technique rather than just posing in front of the students . I also do a lot of adjustment and touching the students . I am doing this to both the gym and the studio. This is what my style is I think.

I got a comment from the gym management today that the student gave negative comment on my teaching . They think i am different than other teacher ( I don't know how and what exactly they mean ) . The comment were : I make them hold too long ( 5 breaths ) , I don't do it together ( I will do the right side and they will do the left side on their own , giving more time for me to do adjustment ) , they can't catch up , my sun salutation is different from others ( I did the a and b and I didn't change anything at all ) .

Not that I can't take comments . I want to teach because teaching is my passion and put in lots of effort in reading up, practicing with different teacher , discussion in forums and find answer. So my question is : should I adjust my way of teaching at the gym or should I just be who I am . Well, maybe they ate right tho.

However, the students from the studio is different . They keep coming back to my class and the owner has to keep me coz they students asked for it.

Is my first month of teaching full time and I really want to teach till a day that I can't move anymore . I find happiness in teaching and I love to share and inspire others

nine scientific facts

Old 11-02-2013, 05:40 AM Some-of-the-Scientific-Mira.jpgEver since the dawn of mankind, we have sought to understand nature and our place in it. In this quest for the purpose of life many people have turned to religion. Most religions are based on books claimed by their followers to be divinely inspired, without any proof. Islam is different because it is based upon reason and proof.

There are clear signs that the book of Islam, the Quran, is the word of God and we have many reasons to support this claim:

? There are scientific and historical facts found in the Quran which were unknown to the people at the time, and have only been discovered recently by contemporary science.

? The Quran is in a unique style of language that cannot be replicated, this is known as the ?Inimitability of the Quran.?

? There are prophecies made in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, which have come to be pass.

This article lays out and explains the scientific facts that are found in the Quran, centuries before they were ?discovered? in contemporary science. It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science but a book of ?signs?. These signs are there for people to recognise God?s existence and affirm His revelation. As we know, science sometimes takes a ?U-turn? where what once scientifically correct is false a few years later. In this article only established scientific facts are considered, not just theories or hypothesis.
Scientific Facts in the Quran

The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century.

Science at the time was primitive, there were no telescopes, microscopes or anything even close to the technology we have today. People believed that the sun orbited the earth and that the sky was held up by big pillars at the corners of a flat earth. Within this backdrop the Quran was revealed, and it contains many scientific facts on topics ranging from astronomy to biology, geology to sociology.

Some people may claim that the Quran was changed as new scientific facts were discovered but this cannot be the case because it is a historically documented fact that the Quran is preserved in its original language[1]. The Quran was written down and memorised by people during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad. One of the copies of the Quran which was written a few years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad is preserved in a museum in Uzbekistan. This copy is over 1400 years old and is exactly the same as the Arabic Quran that we have today[2].

The following are nine scientific facts found in the Quran:
1. Origin of Life

Water is essential for all living things. We all know that water is vital to life but the Quran makes a very unusual claim:

We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe? (Quran 21:30)

In this verse water is pointed out as the origin of all life. All living things are made of cells. We now know that cells are mostly made up of water[3]. For example, 80% of the cytoplasm (basic cell material) of a standard animal cell is described as water in biology textbooks.

The fact that living things consist mostly of water was discovered only after the invention of the microscope. In the deserts of Arabia, the last thing someone would have guessed is that all life came from water.
2. Iron

Iron is not natural to the earth. It did not form on the earth but came down to earth from outer space. This may sound strange but it?s true. Scientists have found that billions of years ago the earth was stuck by meteorites. These meteorites were carrying Iron from distant stars which had exploded[4].

The Quran says the following on the origin of Iron:

?We sent down Iron with its great inherent strength and its many benefits for humankind.? (Quran 57:25)

God uses the words ?sent down? for Iron. It is clear from the verse that Iron is not an earthly material, but was sent down for the benefit of humanity. The fact that Iron came down to earth from outer space is something which could not be known by the primitive science of the 7th century.
3. Sky?s Protection

The sky plays a crucial role in protecting the earth. The sky protects the earth from the lethal rays of the sun. If the sky did not exist then the sun?s radiation would have killed off all life on earth. It also acts like a blanket wrapped around the earth, to protect it from the freezing cold of space. The temperature just above the sky is approximately -270oC. If this temperature was to reach earth then the planet would freeze over instantly. The sky also protects life on earth by warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night[5]. These are some of the many protective functions of the sky.

The Quran asks us to consider the sky in the following verse:

?We made the sky a protective ceiling. And yet they are turning away from Our signs!? (Quran 21:32)

The Quran points to the sky?s protection as a sign of God. The protective properties of the sky were discovered by scientific research conducted in the 20th century.
4. Mountains

The Quran draws our attention to a very important characteristic of mountains:

?Did We not make the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes?? (Quran 78:6-7)

The Quran indicates that mountains have deep roots by using the word stakes to describe them. In fact mountains do have deep roots, and the word stakes is an accurate description for them. A book titled ?Earth? by Geophysicist Frank Press explains that mountains are like stakes, and are buried deep under the surface of the earth. Mount Everest (pictured below), the height of which is approximately 9 km above ground, has a root deeper than 125 km.

The fact that mountains have deep ?stake? like roots was not known, until after the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the beginning of the 20th century.[6]
5. Expansion of the Universe

At a time when the science of Astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in Quran:

?And it is We who have built the Universe with [Our creative] power and keep expanding it.? (Quran 51:47)

The fact that the universe is expanding was discovered in the last century. The physicist Stephen Hawking in his book ?A Brief History of Time? writes, ?The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.?.

The Quran mentioned the expansion of the universe even before the invention of the telescope!
6. Sun?s Orbit

In 1512 the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus put forward his theory that the Sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system, and that the planets revolve around it. The belief that the Sun is stationary was widespread amongst astronomers until the 20th century. It is now a well-established scientific fact that the Sun is not stationary, but is moving in an orbit around the centre of our Milky Way galaxy[7].

The Quran mentions the orbit of the Sun:

?It is He who created night and day, the Sun and the Moon, each floating in its orbit.? (Quran 21:33)

The Quran would have been wrong according to astronomers just a couple of decades ago. But we now know that the Quranic account of the Sun?s motion is consistent with modern Astronomy.
7. The Ocean

The Quran uses imagery to covey its deep meanings, here it describes the state of the unbelievers as:

?Darkness out in a deep ocean which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds, layers of darkness, one upon the other. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. Those God gives no light to, they have no light.? (Quran 24:40)

It is commonly thought that waves only occur on the surface of the ocean. However oceanographers have discovered that there are internal waves that take place below the surface of the ocean. These waves are invisible to the human eye, and can only be detected by specialist equipment[8]. The Quran mentions darkness in a deep ocean above which are waves, above which are waves, then clouds above that. This description is not only remarkable because it describes the internal waves in the ocean, but also because it describes darkness deep in the ocean. A human being can dive no more than 70 metres without breathing equipment. Light is present at that depth, but if we go down 1000 metres it is completely dark[9]. 1400 years ago there were no submarines or specialist equipment to discover internal waves or the darkness deep inside the oceans.
8. Lying and Movement

There was a cruel oppressive tribal leader named Abu Jahl who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him. God revealed a verse of the Quran to warn him:

?No Indeed! If he does not stop, We will seize him by the forehead, his lying, sinful forehead.? (Quran 96:15-16)

God does not call this person a liar, but calls his forehead (the front part of the brain) ?lying? and ?sinful?, and warns him to stop.

This verse is significant for two reasons. The first is that the front part of our brain is responsible for voluntary movement[10].This is known as the frontal lobe. A book titled ?Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology? which includes the results of research on the functions of this area states: The motivation and the foresight to plan and initiate movements occur in the anterior portion of the frontal lobes, the prefrontal area[11]. The part of the brain that is responsible for movement is said to be seized if the man does not stop.

Secondly, numerous studies have shown that this same region (frontal lobe) is responsible for the lying function of the brain[12]. One such study at the University of Pennsylvania in which volunteers were asked questions during a computerized interrogation, it was found that when the volunteers were lying there was significantly increased activity in the prefrontal and premotor cortices (frontal lobe region)[13].

The front part of the brain is responsible for movement and lying. The Quran links movement and lying to this area. These functions of the frontal lobe were discovered with medical imaging equipment which was developed in the 20th century.
9. Pain Receptors

For a long time it was thought that the sense of feeling and pain was dependent on the brain. However it has been discovered that there are pain receptors present in the skin[14]. Without these pain receptors, a person would not be able to feel pain.

Consider the following verse on pain:

?We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the (Hell) Fire. When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is Almighty, All-Wise.? (Quran 4:56)

God tells the people who reject his message that when they are in Hell and their skins are burnt off (so they can?t feel any pain), he will give them new skins so that they continue to feel the pain.

The Quran makes it clear that pain is dependent upon on the skin. The discovery of pain receptors in the skin is a fairly recent discovery for Biology.
Conclusion

These are just some of the many scientific facts found in the Quran. It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science, but that it is consistent with science. To claim that scientific facts in the Quran are due to coincidence would be irrational. The best explanation is that God revealed this knowledge to the Prophet Muhammad.

Just like the Quran contains knowledge about the natural world, it also contains information about the inner dimensions of our souls. It relates to our feelings, wants and needs. The Quran informs us that we have a purpose in life, and that following God?s guidance will lead us to inner peace in this life, and Paradise in the hereafter. And that rejection of his message will lead to depression in this life and Hellfire after death.

?We shall show them Our signs in the Universe and within themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is the witness of all things?? (Quran 41:53

Old 11-05-2013, 06:13 AM One thing which surprises non-Muslims who are examining the book very closely is that the Quran does not appear to them to be what they expected. What they assume is that they have an old book which came fourteen centuries ago from the Arabian desert; and they expect that the book should look something like that - an old book from the desert. And then they find out that it does not resemble what they expected at all. Additionally, one of the first things that some people assume is that because it is an old book which comes from the desert, it should talk about the desert. Well the Quran does talk about the desert - some of its imagery describes the desert; but it also talks about the sea - what it’s like to be in a storm on the sea.
Merchant Marine

Some years ago, the story came to us in Toronto about a man who was in the merchant marine and made his living on the sea. A Muslim gave him a translation of the Quran to read. The merchant marine knew nothing about the history of Islam but was interested in reading the Quran. When he finished reading it, he brought it back to the Muslim and asked, “This Muhammad, was he a sailor?” He was impressed at how accurately the Quran describes a storm on a sea. When he was told, “No as a matter of fact, Muhammad lived in the desert,” that was enough for him. He embraced Islam on the spot.

He was so impressed with the Quran’s description because he had been in a storm on the sea, and he knew that whoever had written that description had also been in a storm on the sea. The description of

“…a wave, over it a wave, over it clouds” (Quran 24:40)

…was not what someone imagining a storm on a sea to be like would have written; rather, it was written by someone who knew what a storm on the sea was like. This is one example of how the Quran is not tied to certain place and time. Certainly, the scientific ideas expressed in it also do not seem to originate from the desert fourteen centuries ago.
The Smallest Thing

Many centuries before the onset of Muhammad’s prophethood, there was a well-known theory of atomism advanced by the Greek philosopher, Democritus. He and the people who came after him assumed that matter consists of tiny, indestructible, indivisible particles called atoms. The Arabs too, used to deal in the same concept; in fact, the Arabic word dharrah commonly referred to the smallest particle known to man. Now, modern science has discovered that this smallest unit of matter (i.e., the atom, which has all of the same properties as its element) can be split into its component parts. This is a new idea, a development of the last century; yet; interestingly enough, this information had already been documented in the Quran 34:3 which states:

“He [i.e., God] is aware of an atom’s weight in the heavens and on the earth and even anything smaller than that...”

Undoubtedly, fourteen centuries ago that statement would have looked unusual, even to an Arab. For him, the dharrah was the smallest thing there was. Indeed, this is proof, that the Quran is not outdated.
Honey

Another example of what one might expect to find in an “old book” that touches upon the subject of health or medicine is outdated remedies or cures. Prophet, may God praise him, gave advice about health and hygiene, which are found in his Prophetic Traditions, and until today this advice is compelling and proven in the field of medicine.

The Quran is a divine revelation and so are the Prophetic Traditions. The Quran sheds light on some remedies as do the Prophetic Traditions; unlike Medical journals of today, there is no information that is outdated in the Quran and the Prophetic Traditions..In specific the Quran mentions one item that can be used as a treatment, which is not in dispute by anyone. It states that in honey there is healing. And certainly, I do not think that there is anyone who will argue with that!

Old 11-09-2013, 05:05 AM “By the sky which returns.” (Quran 86:11)

“[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling…” (Quran 2:22)

In the first verse God swears by the sky[1] and its function of ‘returning’ without specifying what it ‘returns.’ In Islamic doctrine, a divine oath signifies the magnitude of importance of a special relation to the Creator, and manifests His majesty and the supreme Truth in a special way.

The second verse describes the Divine Act that made the sky a ‘ceiling’ for the dwellers of earth.

Let us see what modern atmospheric science has to say about the role and function of the sky.

The atmosphere is a word which denotes all the air surrounding the earth, from the ground all the way up to the edge from which space starts. The atmosphere is composed of several layers, each defined because of the various phenomena which occur within the layer.

Rain, for one, is ‘returned’ to Earth by the clouds in the atmosphere. Explaining the hydrologic cycle, Encyclopedia Britannica writes:

“Water evaporates from both the aquatic and terrestrial environments as it is heated by the Sun’s energy. The rates of evaporation and precipitation depend on solar energy, as do the patterns of circulation of moisture in the air and currents in the ocean. Evaporation exceeds precipitation over the oceans, and this water vapor is transported by the wind over land, where it returns to the land through precipitation.”[2]

Not only does the atmosphere return what was on the surface back to the surface, but it reflects back into space that which might damage the flora and fauna the earth sustains, such as excessive radiant heat. In the 1990’s, collaborations between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) of Japan resulted in the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Science Initiative. Polar, Wind and Geotail are a part of this initiative, combining resources and scientific communities to obtain coordinated, simultaneous investigations of the Sun-Earth space environment over an extended period of time. They have an excellent explanation of how the atmosphere returns solar heat to space.[3]

Besides ‘returning’ rain, heat and radio waves, the atmosphere protects us like a ceiling above our heads by filtering out deadly cosmic rays, powerful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun, and even meteorites on collision course with Earth.[4]

Pennsylvania State Public Broadcasting tells us:

“The sunlight that we can see represents one group of wavelengths, visible light. Other wavelengths emitted by the sun include x-rays and ultraviolet radiation. X-rays and some ultraviolet light waves are absorbed high in Earth’s atmosphere. They heat the thin layer of gas there to very high temperatures. Ultraviolet light waves are the rays that can cause sunburn. Most ultraviolet light waves are absorbed by a thicker layer of gas closer to Earth called the ozone layer. By soaking up the deadly ultraviolet and x-rays, the atmosphere acts as a protective shield around the planet. Like a giant thermal blanket, the atmosphere also keeps temperatures from getting too hot or too cold. In addition, the atmosphere also protects us from constant bombardment by meteoroids, bits of rock and dust that travel at high speeds throughout the solar system. The falling stars we see at night are not stars at all; they are actually meteoroids burning up in our atmosphere due to the extreme heating they undergo.”[5]

Encyclopedia Britannica, describing the role of Stratosphere, tells us about its protective role in absorbing dangerous ultraviolet radiation:

“In the upper stratospheric regions, absorption of ultraviolet light from the Sun breaks down oxygen molecules; recombination of oxygen atoms with O2 molecules into ozone (O3) creates the ozone layer, which shields the lower ecosphere from harmful short-wavelength radiation…More disturbing, however, is the discovery of a growing depletion of ozone over temperate latitudes, where a large percentage of the world’s population resides, since the ozone layer serves as a shield against ultraviolet radiation, which has been found to cause skin cancer.”[6]

The mesosphere is the layer in which many meteors burn up while entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Imagine a baseball zipping along at 30,000 miles per hour. That’s how big and fast many meteors are. When they plow through the atmosphere, meteors are heated to more than 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, and they glow. A meteor compresses air in front of it. The air heats up, in turn heating the meteor.[7]

Earth is surrounded by a magnetic force field - a bubble in space called “the magnetosphere” tens of thousands of miles wide. The magnetosphere acts as a shield that protects us from solar storms. However, according to new observations from NASA’s IMAGE spacecraft and the joint NASA/European Space Agency Cluster satellites, immense cracks sometimes develop in Earth’s magnetosphere and remain open for hours. This allows the solar wind to gush through and power stormy space weather. Fortunately, these cracks do not expose Earth’s surface to the solar wind. Our atmosphere protects us, even when our magnetic field does not.[8]

An artist’s rendition of NASA’s IMAGE satellite flying through a ‘crack’ in Earth’s magnetic field.

How would it be possible for a fourteenth century desert dweller to describe the sky in a manner so precise that only recent scientific discoveries have confirmed it? The only way is if he received revelation from the Creator of the sky.

Old 11-12-2013, 04:54 AM In the Holy Quran, God speaks about the stages of man’s embryonic development:

“We created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed. Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing, and blood clot), then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance)…” (Quran 23:12-14)

Literally, the Arabic word alaqah has three meanings: (1) leech, (2) suspended thing, and (3) blood clot.

the embryo at this stage obtains nourishment from the blood of the mother, similar to the leech, which feeds on the blood of others.

The second meaning of the word alaqah is “suspended thing.” during the alaqah stage, in the womb of the mother.

The third meaning of the word alaqah is “blood clot.” We find that the external appearance of the embryo and its sacs during the alaqah stage is similar to that of a blood clot. This is due to the presence of relatively large amounts of blood present in the embryo during this stage[ Also during this stage, the blood in the embryo does not circulate until the end of the third week. Thus, the embryo at this stage is like a clot of blood.

So the three meanings of the word alaqah correspond accurately to the descriptions of the embryo at the alaqah stage.

The next stage mentioned in the verse is the mudghah stage. The Arabic word mudghah means “chewed substance.” If one were to take a piece of gum and chew it in his or her mouth and then compare it with an embryo at the mudghah stage, we would conclude that the embryo at the mudghah stage acquires the appearance of a chewed substance. This is because of the somites at the back of the embryo that “somewhat resemble teethmarks in a chewed substance.

How could Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, have possibly known all this 1400 years ago, when scientists have only recently discovered this using advanced equipment and powerful microscopes which did not exist at that time? Hamm and Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells (spermatozoa) using an improved microscope in 1677 (more than 1000 years after Muhammad). They mistakenly thought that the sperm cell contained a miniature preformed human being that grew when it was deposited in the female genital tract.

Professor Emeritus Keith L. Moore is one of the world’s most prominent scientists in the fields of anatomy and embryology and is the author of the book entitled The Developing Human, which has been translated into eight languages. This book is a scientific reference work and was chosen by a special committee in the United States as the best book authored by one person. Dr. Keith Moore is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. There, he was Associate Dean of Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and for 8 years was the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy. In 1984, he received the most distinguished award presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the Canadian Association of Anatomists. He has directed many international associations, such as the Canadian and American Association of Anatomists and the Council of the Union of Biological Sciences.

In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Professor Moore said: “It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Quran about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God.

Consequently, Professor Moore was asked the following question: “Does this mean that you believe that the Quran is the word of God?” He replied: “I find no difficulty in accepting this.

During one conference, Professor Moore stated: “....Because the staging of human embryos is complex, owing to the continuous process of change during development, it is proposed that a new system of classification could be developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah (what Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said, did, or approved of). The proposed system is simple, comprehensive, and conforms with present embryological knowledge. The intensive studies of the Quran and hadeeth (reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Muhammad’s companions of what he said, did, or approved of) in the last four years have revealed a system for

classifying human embryos that is amazing since it was recorded in the seventh century A.D. Although Aristotle, the founder of the science of embryology, realized that chick embryos developed in stages from his studies of hen’s eggs in the fourth century B.C., he did not give any details about these stages. As far as it is known from the history of embryology, little was known about the staging and classification of human embryos until the twentieth century. For this reason, the descriptions of the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the seventh century. The only reasonable conclusion is: these descriptions were revealed to Muhammad from God. He could not have known such details because he was an illiterate man with absolutely no scientific training.

Ankle hurts badly in Lotus Pose

Hi Cass, you should not be suffering in any asana....see Gordon's earlier post.

If the suffering is the pain in your ankle during Marichyasana B & D the variations with one leg in half lotus. Then please stop doing these until your ankle is fully healed and your hips are open/flexible enough for half lotus without any pressure on your ankle or knee.

If it is something else that is hurting you must speak to your teacher about it. If he/she cannot give you alternative asanas to do instead or a series of asanas to do to overcome the problem.......you need a different teacher.

Never push/force yourself in any asana. Take it slow. If you cannot breathe fully, easily and slowly in any asana you have probably gone too far. Challenge and encourage yourself, yes.....but never force and a teacher should not be using brute strength to shove you into any assna.

As Gordon suggested start a basic hip opening series, once the hips are open/flexible enough then work on lotus and asanas involving half lotus again.

If the whole of primary series is causing you suffering maybe you should look for another form of yoga or a different teacher.

Good luck.

Worldwide do-it-yourself yoga retreat

I have travelled to different places in the world to do yoga. I do not ever do retreats mainly because its crazy expensive but also because I do not need all that and can find my own accomodations, massage and healthy food and generally at local prices. I much prefer to rent a house or guesthouse and join up at a studio offering a multitude of types of styles of yoga, cost is perhaps $100 dollars per month just for the yoga. I do intensive yoga, detox, and indulge in luxuries, have never paid more than $1000 dollars per month.

I have been going to Ubud, bali for the last few winters, great place for selection of studios, teachings, also not too expensive but on the rise. The place has become overrun with other foreigners all of whom are healers and/or artists., pollution and too too trendy with every overpriced restaurant but worst is the foreigners who go there charging foreign (not local) prices for everything. love the place but sadly its lost its charm and I must move on.

Been for yoga to rishikesh and kovalum in India, Sivananda in Grass valley, California, also trivandrum, ubud of course but wow...that's it

Anyone else do this, or know of others who have and or places in the world where one can go and immerse oneself in yoga for a few months., and for reasonable prices of course

Has anyone been to Costa Rica, Peru, Belize, Mexico,...well absolutely anywhere is possible...and or heard of somewhere that suits my style.

Thanks and happy to meet you all,

Brenda

Is it ok for yoga to hurt if working on an injury?

Let's see where to begin.

1. only muscles should be stretched. Tendons should not.

2. Because the foot is in plantar flexion in Virasana (Hero's pose) the tendon in the back of the ankle (Achilles) is shortened not lengthened. Therefore it is incredibly difficult to stretch that tendon in that pose.

3. Have your asana teacher modify Virasana until there's no pain in the tendon.

Recommendation for Authentic KY Guru in India?

Hello Friends,
I am new to this forum and just joined it moment back.

My spiritual journey begun few years back but ended with huge disasters. I was badly cheated and exploited by a Hindu Guru "Ashutosh Maharaj Ji, Founder of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Santhan, He claimed to impart a "Divine Knowledge, in Hindi that is called "BrahmGyan" with four folds Kriya.
1- Seeing Divine light (while pressing eyes hard and that makes white orb in eyelid),2-Sumiran/japa, 3- Amrit Kriya, 4-Anhad Naad.

And I did not experience anything above except "1". And that too sounds too obvious.
After years and years of practice I achieved nothing..No change. But my whole money was extracted in name of GuruSewa even my house is sold, My job is gone..now I am Zero.
I have to start life from very scratch....Since I don't have anything to lose...but time, which is more precious than materialistic wealth. Hence again with full enthusiasm I am looking for a genuine Kriya Yog Master in India ... But I am not sure..who is imparting real KY.

I heard about the Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chetterzi of West Bangaal. Even I read his book ..and was quite impressed with his knowledge. But still would like to know people's opinion about him. Your opinions are so valuable for me.. could change my life.

Eco Friendly Yoga Mats

Dearest ahimsa, how you make so much sense on all levels, but how hard it is to follow you. And oh how if you were a person, I'd probably punch you in the face out of frustration. In case you don't know what ahimsa is, there are eight limbs of yoga, one of which is the yamas, and ahimsa or "non violence" is one of those. I won't go any deeper into it which no doubt has some yoga scholars chomping at the bit, but many will take ahimsa to the level of trying to be environmentally friendly. You know, non violent towards mother earth and all her cute cuddly animals (mosquitoes don't count according to the Buddha and neither do veggies because we can't hear them scream). As such, it's quite natural that yoga practitioners are purchasing "eco friendly yoga mats" in droves.

What IS "eco friendly" anyway? Well, let's say that you're my friend. And I punch you really hard in the face and break your nose. Am I being friendly? Of course not. Now let's say that I punch you in the face but not as hard and only cause a nose bleed. Am I being friendly? To be friendly, I wouldn't punch you at all. To be "eco friendly", you cannot harm the environment, period.

What IS an eco friendly yoga mat? Well, let's do a Google search for that since the internet would never lie to us, right? The first listing that catches my eye is for an eco friendly yoga mat made by a large, well known company. OOOOH! A click through to their website provides me with the following tantalizing description:

Originally Posted by The Company [The Company] is committed to making the world's best performing, most environmentally-friendly yoga mats, providing the highest level of customer service and giving back to the earth with every product made. All our mats are made sustainably in the US from natural rubber. They provide an optimum grip and offer better cushionand more resilience than any other yoga mat. You can just feel the difference.Bold is mine. "Made sustainably". Now THAT is quite a claim.

Even if your "eco friendly" yoga mat is made from a natural substance such as rubber from a tree, if those trees are not raised organically, that means they are utilizing either (or both) synthetic fertilizer or synthetic pesticides. As each are petroleum based and petroleum is not a renewable resource, your yoga mats are not sustainable. And then of course there is all the environmental damage that non organic pesticides and fertilizers do. They kill the good bugs and microbes, pollute ground water and other fresh water supplies, create dead zones in the ocean, poison people, and the list goes on of NON eco friendly issues that surround them.

If you want to get even deeper into sustainability (I wish more people would) then by definition, anything that is shipped any distance by car, truck, train, ship, or plane is not sustainable. This is due to the fact that each of those modes of transportation utilizes petroleum and it is not a renewable resource.

To be truly sustainable, you have to make drastic changes in your life. If you're not sustainable, are you practicing ahimsa? By purchasing a yoga mat that is not locally sourced from sustainable materials, are you violating ahimsa?

Old 10-23-2013, 01:39 PM Gotta share this. I have just met a homeless woman at the beach. She seem to be intelligent and smart. Her name is Chandra (moon in Sanskrit). Her father named her. He was a ?hari krisha? she said. Then she told me the story of her troublesome parents?..She had been raped and had an abortion at the age of 18, and things of that nature?. Chandra looks like she is 50yo, but she is just 32, like me. She just had a baby boy this summer, and she gave her son to the adoption center, because she has no place to live and no one to support her. She carries her son?s picture, the ones she took in the hospital. Very cute little boy. She said she ?does not miss him, but she loves him?. Chandra told the story of her life as like she would tell me the recipe of a pie. With no regret, sorrow or bitterness. She seem totally enjoy the beautiful day at the beach, sitting next to her dirty bags. She?s got zero attachments and 100% acceptance ( what?s what spiritual seekers are looking to attain). Despite poor look , and all misfortunes, the person radiates light and intelligence?. Old 10-25-2013, 05:32 AM I have the same question as Gordon.

Some people maybe very damaged from these experiences and become just numb, and can tell their tales without being very emotional.

I have heard stories from many women here in Cambodia telling very tragic stories in very dispassionate ways.

One time I had to be the "adult supervision" while a teenage girl told her story to 2 journalists for a story about the NGO that helped her out of her terrible circumstances (very terrible....sold into prostitution by her own mother, HIV positive by age 15, forced into drug addiction by pimp, gang raped, then after rescue and being placed into education and employment by NGO was blackmailed by family into giving 30% of her salary every month...she still gives money to her mother) . Not only was she weirdly calm and almost blank......but the women interviewing her also showed no concern, no pity, no compassion, no sadness.......nothing..... It seemed odd and unhealthy to me.

Old 10-28-2013, 01:06 PM There is some advantage of being born in India. I have seen quite a few spiritually enlightened people who look absolutely common, are very poor by choice or circumstances, and don't feel any urge to speak even when there are good number of expectant listeners.

More interior one goes in India, spirituality is blended in life styles and the folklore so intricately that the joy and contentment on their wrinkled faces is often amazing. And an eye opener too. One stops slotting people by appearances, attire, oratory, "holiness", and what have you. After all, true contentment arrives by itself and yoga or generally, any spiritual path is a "human" need not a pre-requisite.

Yogacambodia, oh no! no there is no numbness. She shared she pictures of the newborn very enthusiastically, but with no drama in her voice. I was quite amazed to hear "I love hum, but i do not miss him" ... sounds like non - attachments to me...

I have a yoga client here from same Ponte Vedra beach, who lives in a million dollar house and she constantly was complains about that her 30 yo kids left house and how lonely and poor she is , and that her husband is at work all the times, and that everything could unfold even better for her...ect.

Need to loose fat ...Suggestions needed

Old 10-26-2013, 01:31 AM
Need to loose fat ...Suggestions needed Hi,

I started doing yoga in 2009 continued till 2012. I did asanas and pranayamas on a split routine, meaning one day of asanas followed by one day on pranayama.

I am 5ft 5". My current bodyweight is 80kgs. I want to reduce it to 60kgs.

I have a huge amount of belly fat. I got fat on my chest too.

I have started weight training for last 3 months.

I want to start yoga again. I go to the gym 4 times a week so I got 3 days left.

I am looking for a routine that will burn fat effectively.

I am really frustrated with my body right now so please understand and dont take this in a wrong way. GIVE ME TRIED AND TESTED SOLUTIONS ONLY.

InnerAthlete's Avatar Tried and tested solutions abound. Unfortunately such things work differently depending on other factors in the formula.

Weight loss questions, I believe, are best posed on a forum specific to that goal. Despite what some members of the community might assert or opt to believe, there is nothing in classical yoga relative to body fat, weight gain, or weight reduction per se. An active asana practice certain has similar physiological effects as "other" activities but Yoga itself can not possibly be called a "weight loss system".

More to the point, it seems from your post like you have the activity part of the formula covered quite well. If that is true AND you are still not seeing changes in your body then the bottle has stopped spinning and points to your diet.

Everyone is different, what works for one may not be effective for another.

Try focusing on any kind of exercise that raises for heart rate and gets you moving vigorously. A gym instructor or personal trainer will be able to give you a fitness test, asses your needs and give advice on exercises to do.

You may also need to look at your diet, and check with a professional about what changes are needed.

Good luck and good health to you and remember that there are no "quick fixes" and if something looks too good to be true.....it probably is.

Old 10-27-2013, 04:13 PM Most important You need to eat some fat to loose fat.

Soak 4 almonds in water over night and chew them thoroughly to a mass and take a new big glass of water and drink it and then you do your asanas without any breakfast or a brisk walk for an hour. When you take almonds first thing in the morning it will avoid your body going into starving mode. Provided that you eat healthy and avoid snacking, sodas and aspartame sweetened things.

Try it for 3 weeks if it does not work for you and your belly fat at least it is healthy for your body and is said to lower blood fat lipids.

I will try your advice from tomorrow but I will have to calculate the new calories that will added due to the addition of almonds.

Right now I am on a 300 calorie deficit in comparison to my TDEE.

Yoga is life. Old 10-28-2013, 04:44 AM Dont care about the calories its maybe 10 grams of almonds. Just weight it and small size is around 4 grams. so i guess its less than 10 even if its bigger size.

You say your self your not loosing anymore maybe your body is in starving mode due to 300 less calories. We are all different maybe your eating to little. If one is 10 kg overweight and do workout and yet not loosing fat. Then your following a standard which might be standard for you.
We are all different so if we follow something that is not working it tells us it is not for us.
Look at your body it will tell you what works or not but do not be scared of fat, fat is likely to help you to loose some pounds. Soap is made from fat and it removes fat.

Everything you do already will be helpful, i mean your routine. The most helpful thing is to EAT LESS...( and preferably raw and organic) is sounds too simple and too difficult to follow for most people. When my clients say that they eat absolutely nothing ans still not losing/gaining , I reply : " there were no one fat in the nazi concentration camp" . No food - no extra pounds. That's it. You juts have to figure out how many calories you burn vs how many you put into you system. I have seen a lot of people *(including myself) who lost a lot just by fasting and eating plain food. AGAIN , it is not might be easy for you as it were for me. I had no problem to refrain from food for 3 days and not to indulge after that(which ruins lots of diets people follow). As well i have no problem to refrain from food and drinks on the social parties. The caveat is that if you let yourself to eat "prohibited food" just once, when more likely it will happened again and again. Among other benefits, Yoga teaches us self discipline, which is helpful on the way of loosing extra lbs. Yoga (i mean real yoga, and following the routine you doing) will help you not to gain again once you loose.

A little tip : some chemicals like soaps, laundry detergents, air fresheners, candles, perfumes, etc... might contribute to hormonal imbalance, and cause u to gain more (cause they mimics estrogen). But again...no food - no wight gain, no matter of hormones and ftuff.

The best reading i would suggest is not about dieting, or exercising, but about willpower. The one good book on willpower is by Roy F. Baumeister and John Tierney , few dollars on amazon

good luck! let us know how are you doing! I would like to follow up with you, seem like you can do it

Old 10-29-2013, 06:37 PM What happened when those in nazi camp had food available? They ate them self to death so they had to give them a ranson and slowly build it up. So its not a healthy recommendation imo.

What if he now restrict his diet even more because his mind is fixed on weight loss? When mind gets stuck on something it can become dangerous like anorexia. Thats pretty serious.

I too can stay away from junk food completely so thats not an issue at least for now. I can't fast for very long, not for even a day. Beside doing weight training 4 times a week I have restarted my yoga practice coz I realized that looking lean and muscular can't be more important than being healthy internally.

I started practicing yoga from 2007 and continued till 2012. This gap of almost a year has effected my flexibility. I can no longer do asanas like ardhachakrasana properly. I hope I will regain my flexibility soon.

I will surely check out that book and write back about my weight after a month.

@fakeyogis

Some years back I was on a ridiculously low diet and the result was quite dangerous. I fainted on the road. It was for a about a minute or so. So I am never going to do that again.

Old 11-06-2013, 05:06 PM I forgot to say you can try evco it can make you shed some pounds and keep you fuller even if not exercising , i lost 5kg last winter instead of gaining by laying in my sofa in 3-4 months time. Google how to use it and start very slowly. Try different brands if you get side effects like stomach ache or extreme hunger or extreme sweating like i got from some brand ,then lower dosage or if thats not working find another brand till you get a good one. With evco i also ate muesli every morning with nuts at 30% fat content. Yet i lost 5kg.

evco is the best ive tried for loosing weight and eating whatever i felt for. Except for candy. If i was demanding any sweet i ate 90% chocolate.

Old 11-09-2013, 07:18 PM O_M_S, can you give a rundown of what a typical day of eating and drinking looks like for you? What specifically do you eat and drink through the course of the day?

Thanks.

How to tell if a yoga teacher training is good?

Hi EbonyYogi,

First of all check your budget and come up with objective of becoming a "certified yoga teacher". Some may want to have another certificate and some want to become a yoga teacher to teach at another studio and some may want to start their own studio. In most of the cases you want to get a certificate which is valid and widely recognized. Yoga Alliance is one of the most popular choices as these days yoga schools/studios are asking for it.

Learning from a certified school or having a certificate doesn't mean that you are very good yoga teacher. It depends quite a lot on "the yoga teacher" who is teaching you and his/her experience. And your capability and willingness to learn.

Yoga teacher training is available in almost every country. And few famous destinations are Goa, Rishikesh and Dharamshala in India, Bali in Indonesia and few places in Thailand. Bali is the most expensive and Thailand is cheaper than Bali and Goa in India is almost 1/3rd to 1/4th in price. Rishikesh and Dharamshala are much cheaper than Goa. In Bali non-residential training is around USD3K-3.5K and on top of that food and accommodation charges. Whereas in Goa you can have residential training for around USD1300 and in Rishikesh and Dharamshala you can get it around USD1000 with accommodation and food.

Above all this teacher plays a big role. Check who the teacher is and what his experience is. What ex-students are talking about him/her? If possible get some contact details of ex-students and talk to them before finalizing.

I hope this helps.

Meera

Vidian neurectomy and ida/pingala circuit

Hello,

I've been suffering allergic and vasomotor rhinitis for the past six years and what doctors here have prescribed me is all about corticoids and chemicals, something I've rejected. This disorder is really disrupting my normal life and yoga sadhana.

I've read that vidian neurectomy, namely cutting off the two nasal nerves responsible for the disorder, is effective to a satisfying degree.

My question is: Could this affect my nadi shodhana practice and the proper functioning of my Ida and Pingala nadis? Or in other words: Does disabling a nerve disable its subtle counterpart -the nadi- as well?

I remember having read that those two nadis "start their route" from the nose.
I'm not 100% sure but I think the nerves I'm talking about are those labeled as "External/Internal nasal branch" in the pictures below.

I know this is a complicated issue, and nobody has the exact answer. Please let me know what you think about.

Thank you so much.
